Butyl rubber (abbreviated as IIR) is a synthetic rubber produced by cationic polymerization of isobutylene and isoprene under the action of Friedel-Craft catalyst. It has excellent air tightness and good heat resistance, aging resistance, ozone resistance, Solvent resistance, electrical insulation, shock absorption and low water absorption properties make it inner tubes, vulcanized bladders, air liner, sidewalls, wires and cables, waterproof building materials, shock absorption materials, medicinal bottle stoppers, food (chewing gum base) , rubber dams, anti-gas appliances, adhesives, inner tubes, door cores, anti-corrosion products, dock ship fenders, bridge support pads and heat-resistant conveyor belts have a wide range of applications.
Three major applications of butyl rubber
1. Tires
The largest application of butyl rubber is in the manufacture of tire innerliners and tire inner tubes. The halogenated butyl rubber used in the tire industry is used as the inner liner for automobile, truck, public vehicle and aircraft tires, and its use accounts for 84.6% of the total consumption of butyl rubber in my country.
The inner liner of radial tires is generally composed of halogenated butyl rubber. Each heavy duty tire uses about 1.2kg of halogenated butyl rubber, each light truck tire is 0.35kg, and each car tire is 0.3kg. At the same time, the all-steel truck radial tire is equipped with 50% butyl inner tube, and the heavy-duty bias tire is equipped with 20% butyl inner tube. On average, each inner tube needs about 2.3kg of ordinary butyl rubber.
2. Medicinal rubber stopper
Butylation of medical stoppers is the second largest demand market for butyl rubber in China. In order to ensure the safety of medication, the national pharmaceutical authority issued the document Guoyao Guanzhu [2000] No. 462, which stipulated that after the end of 2004, all domestic medicinal rubber stoppers (including powder injections, infusions, oral liquids and other dosage forms) should stop using ordinary natural rubber stoppers. Rubber stopper. At present, butyl rubber used in medicinal rubber stoppers in my country accounts for 10.5% of the total consumption. The following introduces several main medicinal rubber stoppers.
3. Others
The remaining 4.9% of butyl rubber is mainly consumed in chewing gum base, waterproof membrane, adhesive, rubber dam, etc. The use of this material is introduced below.
Chewing gum base is a non-nutritive, non-digestible and water-insoluble chewable solid. It is the most basic chewing substance in chewing gum and bubble gum, and some chewing gum product formulations contain a base made of 20%-30% butyl rubber.
Butyl waterproof tape is a life-long non-curing self-adhesive waterproof sealing tape made of butyl rubber as the main raw material and other additives through advanced technology processing. It has strong adhesion to various material surfaces. At the same time, it has excellent weather resistance, aging resistance and water resistance, and plays the role of sealing, shock absorption and protection on the surface of the adherend. The product is completely solvent-free, so it does not shrink or emit toxic fumes. Because it does not cure for life, it is an extremely advanced waterproof sealing material.
The production method of butyl rubber adhesive is as follows: first, butyl rubber is plasticized, then mixed with other solid additives, sliced, and then dissolved in solvent gasoline, and at the same time, 91% isopropyl alcohol is added, and it is dissolved and stirred evenly. . Generally used as solvent pressure sensitive adhesive and sealant.
Rubber dam, also known as rubber sluice, is made of high-strength synthetic fiber fabric as the stress skeleton, coated with butyl rubber inside and outside as a protective layer, processed into tape, and then anchored on the bottom to form a closed dam bag. The drainage pipe is inflated with water (gas) to form a bag-type retaining dam. The crest of the dam can overflow, and the dam height can be adjusted according to needs, and the upstream water level can be controlled to play the role of irrigation, power generation, shipping, flood control, and tide blocking.
